Keep Calm and Have a Cupcake

This has become one of my favorite little sayings! For two reasons really. For one, I LOVE cupcakes!! But the second reason is probably the more important one. It makes sense! All of us, in life, will have moments that seem uncontrollable, chaotic, and stressful. Moments that make us just want to hide in a hole for a while until it's all over. And when you're planning a wedding, those moments can seem to rear their ugly heads more than we would want them to! Sometimes a million details packed into one great event can become overwhelming! This is why I wanted to share with you today.

If your flowers don't turn out quite right, you're the only one that will know. If your bridesmaids' dresses are not quite the perfect shade, you're the only one that will know. Your dream wedding is your dream wedding because of the details before the day comes. But once it's here, the details fade into the background and your left with beautiful you and your new husband. The details surrounding you make the day beautiful, but they're beautiful whether it's what was on paper or not. Everyone will be there celebrating you and your new life!

So keep calm. Have a cupcake. And enjoy the journey of planning your wedding. Take things in stride. Your day will be beautiful. You are beautiful. And you have a beautiful life ahead of you.

Yesterday we had the opportunity to participate in the SoHo Bridal Show at Rosewood Hall. It was great! We had such a great time getting to meet all of the new brides-to-be! With weddings ranging from next Saturday, to the end of next year!

There were so many great vendors there as well! Birmingham is just crawling with talented people! If you didn't get a chance to make it this year, definitely make plans to attend the show in January. It will have a fashion show and everything for all of the newly engaged ladies looking for dresses! Great fun!

New Home Studio!!

Porcelain & Pink has moved to Alabaster! I am so excited about this move! Why? Because I now have a home studio to work from!

For a lot of people, on-location services are a must. But there are tons of people that have asked if I had a place they could come to. I will still be offering the same great on-location services as always, just adding studio services to the menu! This definitely makes makeup for a party or special event, or even weddings much easier if you don't want to put the money into bringing someone to you, but still want great makeup.

Studio services are as follows:

Full Makeup Application - $50

Airbrush Makeup - +$10

False Lashes - +$5

Makeup Lesson - $75

Spray Tan - $25

Services are offered by appointment only, but in a pinch, just call! If it's not Saturday, we can probably work it out!

It's Bronzing Time!

Welcome summer! Officially or not, it's hot! That means it's time to start bearing more skin, so let's get our bronze on!

We're more aware now than ever of the effects of sun exposure and the dangers there. Many women are getting smart about their golden glow! This is the day of the spray tan, self-tanners, and bronzers! You can take care of your skin and still look sun kissed and gorgeous! So here are some tips to a beautiful bronze!!

First things first! Put on some type of sunscreen every day! Don't be fooled into thinking that you're ok without it. If you get your picture taken at a medical spa or somewhere that has those UV cameras, it's very common to have more sun damage on the left side of your face because it's facing the window when you drive. Be aware of your face and hands!

Remember when bronzing your face that the goal is to look like the glow is from within; natural. So remember the details - bring the bronzer back onto your ears and down your neck. If you're wearing your hair up, remember to hit the back of your neck with it. You don't want makeup lines. Period.

The trick to really getting that glow is to remember that you're not going to be able to use just one product and be done. Or just one texture. Grab a bronzer that has little to no sparkle or shimmer in it and use that to contour your face and add color. Then grab a more shimmery, light color to add a highlight to give the face some shape. Take the highlight on the tops of the cheek bones, down the bridge of the nose, the center of the forehead, a touch on the chin, and pop a little on the cupid's bow of your lip. Beautiful!

TIP: If you grab a shimmer that is TOO shimmery, you exit Bronze Goddess and enter Makeup Queen. Remember that the goal is NATURAL! (Not that ALL of your makeup has to be natural, but you don't want your face to look like you were chiseled out of stone, or are posing as a disco ball! Moderation.)

S/S 2011 Fashion Week Makeup Trends

Here's some tips and trends we learned about from our MAC training this week. We watched videos straight from fashion week, and here it is for you!

“Whatever the vibe, this season's makeup is big on brave statements., experimental textures, handsome femininity, and above all, an excitement about putting the art back in artistry...”

(I don't know who to quote that for, but I didn't make it up!)

If you follow our Facebook page, you've already heard me mention this, but we're going to see a lot of madly bright color, Either on both eyes and lips, or mixed with a very toned down everything else. Weather it's your lip or your eye or both, it's as bright as you can get it, but the skin is uber-natural.

Another look we'll be seeing a lot of is chalky, neon pastels. (Que the Nicki Minaj lip. ha.) “Pretty with a punked-up undertone, this is super feminine at it's most forward thinking.” “I'm definitely feeling the direction for tough makeup done in very pretty colours – it gives an edge that's still very chic and beautiful.” Artist: Terry Barber

Another look, we've been seeing a lot of for some time now; an emphasis on luminous, healthy skin. But not forgetting texture. Pair matte textures, with a glowing skin. “It's all about the prep of the skin – conditioning and nourishing it to the max.” Artist: Sam Bryant.

The last look is a modern bronze goddess. But put down the shimmers! This is a more creamy, elegant bronze. Try using one bronzer (definitely not a shimmery one), and three different brushes. One to sculpt the cheek bones, one to shade they eyes, and a stiff one to line the eyes. “It's very chic, giving dimensions to the face with a very soft illusion of toffees and warm browns – it's about putting definition into the face without looking overly makeup-py.” Artist: Lisa Butler.

I always love a new year and this one is off to a great start! I always believe what's to come will be better than before even though I can't imagine how! I have had an extremely blessed 2010! And I'm ready for my mind to be blown with what 2011 has to offer!

Porcelain & Pink kicked off the new year with the Southern Bridal Show at the BJCC. Wow! We did so many makeup demos and spoke to so many beautiful Birmingham brides to be! Everyone we met was fabulous, but we didn't even scratch the surface of who all was there! I can't wait to be a part of all of these weddings! Here is a picture of Porcelain & Pink's very first booth!

Then, coming up on Valentines Day is 'I Do at the View!' We will be doing makeup for about 13 brides that will get to be married at Vulcan! Spread the word about the event to whoever you think would be interested! Pre-planned, beautifully done wedding ceremonies. Pictures, cake, flowers, makeup, and all!

The "No Makeup Makeup"

Hello Lovely Ladies!! It's been a while, I know! But let's get to it....

Summer is coming to a close! But a lot of you are still sporting that summer glow. (Some of us are as pale as ever, but this is for everyone!) As we all know, here in Alabama, we don't quite have four seasons so to change over to fall clothes and makeup is usually premature feeling to do with the seasons. But not this year!

One of the big trends this year, among others, is going to be a very natural makeup. What I like to call the "no makeup makeup." This will be a fantastic transition from summer, as well as a great, fresh version of winter.

No extra coverage this year. Show your freckles if you have them. The goal is to look beautiful, but effortless. Grab the tinted moisturizers, tinted lip conditioners, and don't forget a nice pop of color on the cheeks. To get a great glow in the fall/winter months, try mixing MAC's Strobe Cream with the foundation you already have to sheer it out and add a glow.

Just remember, the secret to makeup looking it's best is what's underneath the makeup! Take care of your skin. Always wash, tone, moisturize, exfoliate, and drink plenty of water! This will help you pull off the "no makeup makeup" trend with effortless beauty!

The Almighty Smokey Eye

A smokey eye is probably the most asked for, and well known look of all! It is also the one that people have the most trouble with. "I look like I was punched in the face when I do it myself!" is the most common thing I hear when I talk with people about a smokey eye. Well it's time to learn a little something new!

Must haves when creating a smokey eye:
EYE LINER
MASCARA
MID TONE EYE SHADOW (did you see that, NOT black!)

There are a few different ways to do a smokey eye, but we're not here to get in too deep today. We just need to make it happen, right?

When you start your smokey eye, eye liner and mascara are going to be the key to making it smokey. Go ahead and line the inside rim of your eye, as well as your top lash line with a black, or very dark brown or purple eyeliner (whichever matches the shadow you picked). This is your starting point.

Next, take the eye shadow that you have ready. Now I stressed that it doesn't need to be black for two reasons. One is that we're looking for a well done, easy to wear, grown and sexy smokey, as opposed to an amateur, club girl smokey. The second is that it's just plain easier not to use black! This could be a plum, brown, gray, or even a navy. Just don't get TOO dark.

Take your eyeshadow brush and begin applying the shadow at the base of your lashes. The idea of a smokey eye is to be dark by the lashes and fade up to your nothing. So feel free to apply plenty of shadow by your lashes, but only go about half way up your eyelid. Then make sure you have a soft, fluffy brush and begin to apply the shadow softer. Once you get to your crease (the place where your eyeball stops and you're about to get to your brow bone) you don't need to have much shadow at all. Be sure that you use a soft brush so that your crease is good and buffed in. We don't want any hard lines here!

All that's left to do is pile on that mascara!! Apply a few coats so your lashes are good and dark. A smokey eye without enough mascara just isn't finished.

That's all there is to it! When practicing, remember that less is more. When you get the technique down, then experiment! Makeup is an art, not a science!

Lovely Lashes!

Lashes! They finish off a look, give you a little life when you don't have time for the whole sha-bang, and are either right or wrong. So here's a little help for getting lovely lashes everytime...

1. Never pump your mascara. That pumps air into the tube so it dries out faster. Just spin the brush around in the tube to get it good and covered.

2. Change out your mascara every so often. You should get new mascara every 3 or 4 months. You wouldn't expect your milk to taste right after the expiration date, and your mascara won't act right either. It will start getting clumpy on you, not to mention the fact that your eyes are very sensitive so you need to keep it fresh.

3. Use a lash primer. I especially like a primer when using a waterproof mascara because I feel like it's so harsh on the lash. Primer will help it come off easier later so you won't pull you lashes out, and it will keep your lashes conditioned, even with regular mascara, as well as add a base layer for plumping them up.

4. Start at the base of your lashes and wiggle the brush until you get to the end. Wiggle to keep them separated. If you just comb the brush through, you're more likely to clump the lashes together. It's the base of your lashes that really make them look thicker, so wiggle as far down to the lash line as you can get!

5. Apply powder under your eyes. Concealers and foundations are so emollient that the mascara is just attracted to it and will smudge under your eyes. We sometimes blame it on bad mascara, when sometimes it's just good concealer! Even if that's the only place you powder, put some there to prevent raccoon eyes.

6. False Lashes! Of course, that's a whole other blog! But they are great for a special occasion oomph!

Now get out there and flutter those lovely lashes ladies!

Oh! Reader Beware!

I have come across so many websites that have the most ridiculous information on them!

Dear Makeup Lover,

Please do not believe everything you hear or read about makeup! I, myself, will even get confused when I get to reading some of the stuff that is posted on the internet. So many people have made up so many rules, most of which are not true at all. The fact is, makeup is an art, not a science. I know that doesn't help those of you who need a definite answer of how you need to do you makeup, and how you need to pick out your colors, but that's what one on one consultations are for. No one from Bobbie Brown, to little Sally's mom from down the street, including myself, can say a blanket statement about makeup that is always true for every person.

This is not to say you shouldn't listen to any of it. There is a lot of helpful information out there. My rule of thumb is, you need to see the same information given in several different places, by different people to change your life over it, or even write it in the rule book.

In the mean time, if you need help with your makeup that you can't find a good, solid answer for, give me a call. We'll sit down and tailor your makeup for you. We're all different and have different features, likes, and dislikes. You don't need someone else's makeup routine. Let's build your own.

Good times with Straight Line Stitch

Last night was spent at Sloss Furnace till the wee hours of the morning filming the new music video for Straight Line Stitch. It was a great time and a great experience! Check out a couple of shots from the night...

Porcelain & Pink did makeup for an eight page spread for the February issue! Got a random call last night wanting to know what I was up to at 8am the next morning. Turned out to be makeup for a photo shoot!

Eight o'clock comes early in the morning, but it was well worth it. Mountain Brooke Community Church let us borrow their college ministry facility and it was perfect! It was a fun morning of makeup, chit chat, and staring at pastries and soda that I definitely didn't need to have anything to do with. (and didn't) I can't wait to see how it all turns out!

Some Tips to Save Some $$$

Here's a few tips that might help you save a little dough in your makeup shopping...

1. Don't toss all of those half used lipsticks you have laying around!There's a lot of lipstick left down in that tube! Take a toothpick or something and dig it out and put it in a pill box. Now you have a palette to carry around to mix and match just like the pros!
(Extra tip for lipsticks - if they are MAC lipsticks, hang on to the empty tubes! Take any 6 MAC containers (glass, metal, or plastic) back to a MAC counter and you will get a free lipstick of your choice for recycling! Your prize for being a good citizen.)

2. Instead of expensive facial scrubs, use a small handful of regular white sugar. Just lather up your face with a cleanser, then scrub in the sugar using your finger tips in small circular motions.

3. Vaseline makes a great makeup remover!

4. Out of blush? Use a lipstick you have as a creme blush. Choose lighter shades and blend it on your cheeks after foundation and before powder.

5. Double your light shimmer color for both a face and an eye highlight. No need for two.

Just a little, but I hope it helps! Why buy new stuff you already have? Save that money for bigger better things!

If you've been to it so far, I'm sure you've noticed that the web site has not been anywhere near presentable. But look again! We've been working on it and it's actually got information on it now! Hooray! That's what web sites are for, huh?

Also, just wanted to share a little bit of love from a training I just went to in Atlanta...

Brows!

Eye brows can make or break your makeup! I've always paid a lot of attention to brows because mine are drastically different from my hair color and I look silly if I don't give them some love. Even if I don't do anything else besides mascara.
Most people know enough about grooming themselves to keep them waxed or plucked. But not so many people go farther than that. Some brows are naturally full so shaping and some brow gel is fine. But more people than not need a little drawing or filling in. Eye brows are the framework of your face and you'll be surprised how it changes your whole look when petted a little bit!

Color, of course, is a very important part of filling in your brows. Generally you'll want to go about 2 shades lighter than your hair color. White, gray, and blond will often choose a light taupe color.Christian Dior makes a "one color fits all" eye brow pencil that twists up and is a great choice for many hair colors. It can be too light for people with darker hair, but still a good base to be covered by a shadow if you need a lot of drawing and don't want to over do it.
Remember, with age, don't edge on the thin side, but go ahead and frame your face well, always watching the darkness.

Porcelain & Pink is a cosmetic consulting and makeup artistry company operating in the Birmingham area. I, Jennifer Matthews, am the owner and am who you'll be hearing from here at the blog. Making women look and, more importantly, feel beautiful is what I just LOVE!

We do mostly wedding makeup. It's so much fun to be involved with people's most important day! We also to in-home consultations and lessons so you can learn one on one what will be perfect for you. We'll even go through the makeup you already have and tell you what you need to keep, toss, and what you need to add to it. So much fun!
